The Yamaha DT Story—and Why Exact Fitment Matters
Yamaha’s DT story began with the 1968 DT-1, an air-cooled 246cc two-stroke single that helped establish the trail-bike category. The DT name later appeared across a much wider range of motorcycles. Yamaha’s own history records DT360, DT250 and DT100/125 models in 1973, followed by models including the DT400 and DT50.
The 1984 DT200R represents a major technical change within that history. Yamaha equipped it with a liquid-cooled two-stroke engine, YEIS, YPVS and a front disc brake. Yamaha also cataloged the DT200WR and DT125R as separate models. Those differences make Yamaha DT a useful family name, but not a promise that parts interchange across every DT motorcycle.
