Yamaha TZ Production Road Racers
Yamaha’s TZ name belongs to a lineage of purpose-built production road racers, not one interchangeable motorcycle platform. Yamaha released the liquid-cooled two-stroke TZ250 and TZ350 for privateer competition in 1973. The 1974 TZ750 moved to an inline-four Formula 750 design, although Yamaha specifies that first production version at 694 cc. The TZ125 occupied its own single-cylinder class and later returned as a newly developed production racer.
Designs also changed substantially within one model name. Early TZ250 racers used an inline-twin engine, while Yamaha’s later TZ250 development adopted a 90-degree V-twin. TZ is also distinct from the road-going TZR racer-replica family, TDR road/trail motorcycles and YZR factory racers. A displacement badge, shared prefix or nearby model year does not establish interchangeability.
