Yamaha TZR Two-Stroke Sportbike Generations

Yamaha developed the TZR line as road-going racer-replica motorcycles, distinct from purpose-built TZ production road racers. The 1985 TZR250 paired a liquid-cooled two-stroke inline twin with an aluminum Deltabox frame. Yamaha’s second-generation 1989 TZR250 retained an inline twin but changed to rear-facing exhaust ports, while the 1991 TZR250R moved to a newly developed 90-degree V-twin. The model year and complete suffix are essential parts of the motorcycle’s identity.

The TZR125 and TZR50 or TZR50R are separate smaller-displacement platforms, not scaled-down sources of TZR250 interchange. Market naming matters, and a shared TZR prefix, similar bodywork or nearby model year does not establish common brake, fuel-system, steering or engine parts.

Verify the Model Code, Market and Installed Part

Start with the full designation on the motorcycle and frame label, including R, SP, SPR or other suffixes, then follow the exact fitment on the individual product page. The current engine gasket set carries a broad catalog span that crosses materially different TZR250 generations; do not order it from the combined year tags alone. Confirm the engine layout, every gasket opening and the original reference before purchase.

For other parts, compare the details that control installation: brake-pad outline and pin location; lever pivot and hydraulic interface; master-cylinder bore and seal dimensions; tank-cap diameter, latch and venting; petcock flange and bolt spacing; and steering-bearing diameters and stack height. PartsNMore has supplied motorcycle parts since 2002, with free shipping to the USA and Canada on orders over $50.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Yamaha TZR and TZ parts interchangeable?
No. Yamaha describes TZR models as road-going racer replicas, while TZ models are purpose-built production road racers. Use a part across those families only when the exact listing and OEM reference document it.
Will one TZR250 part fit every 1987–1992 model?
Not automatically. Yamaha changed from an early inline twin to a rear-exhaust second generation in 1989 and then to the V-twin TZR250R in 1991. Confirm the full model code, engine layout, year, OEM number and dimensions.
Does TDR250 engine ancestry make all TDR250 and TZR250 parts interchangeable?
No. Yamaha says the TDR250 used TZR250-derived parallel-twin architecture, but it had a different chassis and purpose. Only an individually cross-listed, generation-correct component should be shared.
Are TZR50 and TZR50R the same model?
Do not assume so. Yamaha documents TZR50R as a distinct development with a different engine package. Market-year naming varies, so match the exact suffix, frame or model code, OEM number and installed hardware.
