About the Suzuki GS1000

Find the right starting point for a GS1000 roadster, shaft-drive tourer, sport model or custom.

Suzuki Motorcycle Logo

Suzuki introduced the GS1000 in 1978 with a 997 cc air-cooled four-cylinder engine, double overhead camshafts and a five-speed gearbox. The name grew into a family of motorcycles with different final drives, chassis equipment and engine generations. Those differences matter most when a restoration combines original parts with later replacements.

Which GS1000 collection should you use?

Use the complete model designation to narrow the product grid, then choose the job. A carburetor rebuild, a leaking engine cover and a brake overhaul each need their own parts list. The comparison below puts the main GS1000 branches in one place.

Prepare for the repairIdentify your GS1000 components

Carburetor identification

Photograph the markings on the carburetor bodies and the fitted float bowls. A base-model GS1000 carburetor kit covers a different application from the 1980 E/S kit. Keep the rack identification with your repair notes.

Brake and clutch identification

For pads, record the caliper position and compare the removed pad outline and retaining features. For a clutch, distinguish friction plates from plain steel plates and use the correct manual for stack order and quantity.

Suzuki GS1000 parts questions

What is the difference between GS1000L and GS1000GL?
GS1000L is the chain-drive custom version; GS1000GL is the shaft-drive custom version. Look at the rear drive assembly and retain the complete model designation when choosing parts.
Are the early GS1000S and the GS1000S Katana the same engine generation?
No. The early 1979–1980 S belongs to the eight-valve family. The 1982 GS1000S Katana uses a different sixteen-valve engine generation. Choose engine gaskets and clutch parts for the correct version.
Which carburetor kit fits a 1978 or 1979 GS1000?
Kit 48-1965 lists the base GS1000 for 1978–1979. An E, G, S, GL or L suffix requires its own application check. Identify any replacement carburetor rack before selecting the kit.
Are the GS1000 clutch friction plates sold as complete sets?
The friction plates linked in this guide are sold individually. Order the quantity required for the specified clutch, and inspect the separate steel plates before deciding what to replace.
