About the Suzuki GS1000S
Two GS1000S generations share a name. Their engine and service-part differences belong up front.
The early GS1000S is the sporting model commonly known as the Wes Cooley replica. The later U.S.-market GS1000S Katana uses a 998 cc, sixteen-valve engine developed from the GS1100, with distinctive bodywork and clip-on handlebars. Identify the engine generation before choosing gaskets or clutch components.
Separate the early S from the 1982 Katana
The parts below give useful examples of the split: the early valve-cover gasket covers S 1979–1980, and the clutch friction plates differ between S 1980 and S 1982. Front-pad applications are more specific: one product covers 1979, while another covers 1980 and 1982 as separate entries.

Engine generation
Keep a photograph of the engine number with the frame identification. For a replacement engine, identify that unit independently before choosing its cover gaskets or internal parts.
Katana controls and front end
The period U.S. Katana used clip-ons and anti-dive front forks. Inspect the fitted front end and master cylinder during brake work; modified controls need their own mounting and clearance checks.
