About the Yamaha XJ650

Carburetor, engine, fork and brake repairs across the XJ650 family.

Yamaha Motorcycle Logo

The XJ650 family brings together Maxim, Seca and Turbo motorcycles with different service requirements. Yamaha’s fully faired 1982 Turbo used a carbureted, turbocharged 653cc four-cylinder engine. Its fuel-system requirements make the complete model designation particularly useful when buying parts.

Choose the XJ650 engine gasket set by year

Standard XJ650 engine gasket sets divide into 1980–1981 and 1982–1983 groups. The early set also includes specific Midnight Maxim and Seca applications. The comparison panel below links both standard sets so you can compare their coverage and contents before opening the engine.

Know your motorcycle before choosing partsYamaha XJ650 model differences

Start with the motorcycle variant. These examples show where engine and fuel parts separate.

Standard XJ650

1980–1981 and 1982–1983 engine gaskets

The standard XJ650 uses two separately listed gasket sets across these years.

Parts checkpoint: Use the engine year, then compare the supplied gaskets.

1980–1981 XJ650 gasket set

1982–1983 XJ650 gasket set

XJ650L

Midnight Maxim and Turbo

A 1981 Midnight Maxim gasket application is different from a 1982 Turbo float-valve application.

Parts checkpoint: The year is essential when a part uses the shortened L designation.

XJ650R

Seca repair parts

The Seca page includes carburetor, engine gasket and brake components explicitly covering 1982 XJ650R.

Parts checkpoint: Choose an R-model entry rather than assuming standard XJ650 coverage includes it.

Frame, engine & fitted componentsYamaha XJ650 identification checklist

Use these details to match your motorcycle and any replacement assemblies before ordering.

  1. Copy the frame/VIN and complete model code from the motorcycle, not only a tank badge or registration shorthand.
  2. Record the engine number if the engine has been replaced.
  3. Identify whether the bike has its original naturally aspirated or Turbo intake system.
  4. Photograph carburetor markings, brake castings and fork dimensions for the assembly being repaired.

Yamaha XJ650 parts questions

Which Yamaha XJ650 collection should I use?
Use the XJ650 parent collection to compare the family, XJ650R for Seca applications, and XJ650L for the year-specific Midnight Maxim and Turbo parts. Keep the full model code and year together when selecting a component.
How do the standard XJ650 engine gasket sets differ?
The two linked sets separate 1980–1981 from 1982–1983 standard XJ650 engines. Select the correct engine year, then compare package contents with the joints you are repairing. The later standard set does not establish Turbo or Seca fitment.
Which XJ650 models does the carburetor rebuild kit cover?
The linked kit covers 1980–1983 standard XJ650 and 1982 XJ650R. XJ650L is not included. Check the carburetor identification and package quantity when planning work on the complete carburetor bank.
What information helps identify parts for a modified XJ650?
Provide the complete model code, year and engine identification, plus photographs of the assembly being repaired. Carburetor markings, brake castings and fork dimensions are useful when those components have been replaced.
