About the Honda CB400T1

Fuel, intake and control repairs for the original drum-brake Hawk I.

Honda Motorcycle Logo

The CB400T1 is the Hawk I version of Honda’s early 400 twin. Its original front drum brake and manual transmission distinguish its controls from the disc-brake Hawk II and torque-converter Hondamatic.

Restore the control and intake parts that belong on a T1

Alongside the shared carburetor kit, this guide includes the throttle sleeve, clutch-lever pivot hardware and individual intake holder with O-ring. These help address worn controls or an intake connection without treating a rebuild kit as a complete fuel-system restoration package.

Shared fuel parts do not establish interchangeability of front brakes, wheels or transmission components.

Frame, engine & fitted componentsHonda CB400T1 identification checklist

Use these details to match your motorcycle and any replacement assemblies before ordering.

  1. Record the frame/VIN, T1 designation, model year and separate engine number.
  2. Inspect the front drum and mechanical brake controls; note a replacement wheel or disc-brake conversion.
  3. Read the fitted carburetor body identification before choosing the rebuild kit.
  4. Identify whether fuel leakage comes from the cap seal, tap, hose connection or another joint before ordering.

Honda CB400T1 parts questions

Can Hawk II front-caliper parts be used on an original Hawk I?
The original CB400T1 Hawk I uses a front drum brake. Hawk II front-caliper components service a hydraulic disc brake. For a T1 with a disc conversion, identify the replacement wheel, caliper and controls rather than ordering from the original frame model alone.
Is a separate intake holder available for the CB400T1?
Yes. The linked intake holder with rubber O-ring explicitly lists CB400T1 1978–1979 and is sold individually. Compare the mounting pattern, carburetor spigot and installed holder. It is separate from the carburetor rebuild kit.
What does the Hawk I throttle sleeve replace?
The linked sleeve fits beneath the grip and operates the throttle cable inside the housing. It lists CB400T1 1978–1979. It is not a replacement cable, grip or complete throttle housing; compare those components separately.
Is the Hawk I steel clutch plate a complete clutch pack?
No. The linked plate is sold individually for CB400T1 1978–1979. Determine the required steel plates, friction plates and springs from the identified clutch. The clutch-lever pivot hardware in this guide services a different part of the control system.
