About the Suzuki GS550L
Suzuki GS550L carburetor kits, engine gaskets, fork seals and brake parts for getting your motorcycle back on the road.
The GS550L belongs to Suzuki’s long-running GS550 four-cylinder family, but its parts applications span changes that a single model name cannot explain. In this collection, 1980–1982 carburetor service parts sit alongside engine gasket applications for 1983–1986. A restoration should keep those groups separate.
Rear disc or rear drum: identify the assembly first
Rear pads and rear shoes are not alternative grades of the same part. Pads work against a disc; shoes work inside a drum. The GS550L rear pad application shown here covers 1979–1981, while the shoe application covers 1983 and 1985–1986. Check the actual rear wheel and brake before ordering, especially on a motorcycle rebuilt from more than one donor.
Model and year comparisonGS550L repair parts by model and year
These years apply to the parts. They are not complete motorcycle production ranges or confirmation that other parts interchange.
| Model | Repair part | Listed years | Before ordering |
|---|---|---|---|
| GS550L | Carburetor overhaul | 1980–1982 | Compare its contents with the repair; a kit listing does not establish that every carburetor seal is included. |
| GS550L | Later engine gaskets | 1983–1986 | Check the included gasket list against the engine joints you will disturb. |
| GS550L | L-model fork seals | 1983–1985 | Compare with the existing seals and fitted fork; do not extend this product to 1986. |
| GS550L | Rear drum brake service | 1983, 1985–1986 | The application omits 1984 and requires the matching rear drum assembly. |
| GS550L | Earlier rear disc service | 1979–1981 | Match the fitted rear disc caliper; these pads are separate from later drum-brake shoes. |
Working on another version? Compare GS550E engine and fork parts or return to all GS550 models. Shared model-family links do not establish interchangeability.
Prepare for the repairGS550L identification checklist
Use the motorcycle’s markings, model-year paperwork and fitted components together. This checklist does not assign frame or engine serial ranges.
| Check | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| L-model identity | Record the full GS550L designation, year and market rather than using GS550 alone. |
| Rear brake | Check whether the fitted rear wheel uses a disc caliper or drum and photograph the assembly. |
| Fork seals | Read the old seal markings and compare the fork dimensions; E-model fork seals are a separate listing. |
| Carburetor and engine | Keep carburetor identification separate from engine gasket selection, especially after an engine swap. |
