About the Honda XR500R
Practical repair choices for the early and later XR500R applications.
An XR500R rebuild can bring worn suspension, oil leaks and brake wear onto the same job list. Begin with the fitted engine and chassis, then group parts by the assembly you are repairing. The XR500 family guide also covers the earlier XR500 applications if the model description on your paperwork is incomplete.
Plan the fork, brake and engine jobs separately
The fork seals and rear-shoe pack below cover XR500R 1981–1982. The gasket set and front disc pads cover 1983–1984. For fork leaks, inspect the tube surfaces as well as the seals. For brake work, match the fitted drum or caliper before deciding which friction parts and hardware to replace.

1981–1982 fork and rear-brake work
The selected oil seals and rear drum shoes explicitly include this early XR500R range. Check dimensions and the wheel position before adding parts.
1983–1984 engine and front-brake work
The later gasket set and front disc pads belong to this stated range. Do not use those matches to infer earlier engine or brake compatibility.
Identify your motorcycle before orderingXR500R identification checklist
Use the motorcycle’s identification and the fitted component together. A registration year or family name can leave important application details unresolved.
- Record the XR500R year and engine markings before opening the engine.
- Check fork diameter and the old oil-seal markings for a fork repair.
- Identify the rear drum and front caliper independently; each repair uses different friction and sealing parts.
