About the Yamaha XJ600N
Bowl-joint sealing and valve-clearance service for the XJ600N.
A float-bowl reseal and a valve-clearance check need different information from an XJ600N owner. For the carburetor, record the body markings and gasket profile. For the valves, keep a written record of the measured clearances and installed shim sizes. Those details make it easier to choose the small parts required for each job.
Prepare measurements before buying shims
Record each measured valve clearance and identify the installed shim before selecting a replacement thickness. A shim kit offers a selection of sizes; it does not remove the need to calculate the required change using the service manual. For carburetor leaks, establish whether fuel is escaping at the bowl joint or overflowing before choosing a gasket.

Carburetor sealing
Bowl joint or fuel overflow?
A bowl gasket seals the joint between the bowl and carburetor body. It will not correct an overflowing carburetor caused by a float valve or fuel-level problem.
Valve service
Thickness is a measured choice
The selected shim kit lists XJ600N 2000–2002. Choose individual thicknesses only after measuring clearances and checking the required shim diameter.
Individual shims
Buy the thickness the measurements require
Individual shim listings are useful when the measured clearances identify the sizes needed. Confirm the shim diameter and thickness and check how many valves require that size before ordering.
Identify your motorcycle before orderingXJ600N identification checklist
Record the motorcycle’s identification and check for replacement assemblies before choosing service parts.
- Record the full XJ600N designation, model year and frame-label information rather than relying on a tank badge.
- For valve work, note each clearance, existing shim thickness and the specified clearance range from the correct service manual.
- Photograph the carburetor bowl joint being resealed; for valve work, keep a clear record of measurements and the existing shim markings.
