About the Yamaha XS1100S
Yamaha XS1100S Special carburetor rebuild kits, brake-caliper repair parts, clutch plates and engine gaskets.
The XS1100S Special belongs to Yamaha’s air-cooled, shaft-driven XS1100 four-cylinder family. For a restoration, the Special designation matters most when the order moves from engine service into chassis and controls. Shared family listings should be read alongside the S-model product for the motorcycle being repaired.
XS1100S carb kits and engine gaskets have different year ranges
The carburetor examples separate 1979 from 1980–1981. The caliper kit and clutch plate cover XS1100S 1979–1981, while the engine gasket set lists Special 1979–1980 only. A 1981 Special therefore needs a separate gasket application check, even when its carb and clutch parts appear beside earlier years.
Model and year comparisonXS1100S model and repair differences
Separate standard, Special and Midnight Special before comparing carburetor or chassis parts.
1979 Special
Early carburetor application
The early kit 48-1407 includes XS1100S 1979. The same kit also lists other Yamaha models, which does not broaden the Special year range.
Before ordering: Use the S-model line.
1980–1981 Special
Later carburetor application
Kit 48-1408 lists both later S years. The engine gasket set includes 1980 but does not list 1981 for the Special.
Before ordering: Keep carburetor and gasket coverage separate.
Brake restoration
Identify the installed caliper
The selected caliper kit covers XS1100S 1979–1981, but the listing still requires a position and component comparison.
Before ordering: Check caliper markings and seal dimensions.
Comparing versions? Yamaha XS1100 Midnight Special parts has its own model and year applications.
Prepare for the repairXS1100S identification checklist
Record the model year, full factory code and installed components. Use the matching factory documentation to check frame and engine numbers.
Special designation
Copy the complete frame model code and model year. Check imported-bike paperwork against the markings on the motorcycle.
Carburetor year group
Photograph the bank identification and compare the float-valve and gasket requirements with the early or later kit listing.
Controls and brakes
Record which brake is being serviced and identify replacement controls. Handlebar changes can affect cable reach without changing the motorcycle’s model code.
