About the Yamaha XS400R Seca

Parts selection for the later DOHC Seca engine and its distinct chassis.

Yamaha Motorcycle Logo

The 1982 Seca 400 introduced a 399cc DOHC twin, Yamaha's YICS intake system and monoshock rear suspension. Its engine and chassis differ from the earlier XS400. Those differences make the R model code useful for more than identification: they change which gasket, carburetor and suspension applications belong on the order.

The featured Athena engine gasket set and float-needle product list XS400R 1982–1984. The front master-cylinder kit, fork dust seals and tank-cap examples list 1982–1983. Keep those limits attached to each repair part instead of treating every item as a three-year application.

Engine, fuel and chassis examples

The linked master-cylinder kit, dust seals and cap name these R years. Match their dimensions and mounting details to the components on the bike.

Engine gasket and float-needle entries

The selected gasket set and float-needle listing include 1984. The earlier chassis examples need separate confirmation for that year.

Return to the family guide to compare the early overhaul set and S-specific brake examples. A similar badge does not confirm engine interchange.

Frame, engine and fitted componentsYamaha XS400R Seca identification checklist

  • Record the frame/VIN, engine marking and complete R-model designation against the matching documentation.
  • Identify the fitted DOHC engine before selecting the gasket set; distinguish engine changes from cosmetic changes.
  • For fuel-level problems, record the carburetor body marking and compare the needle tip, seat and sealing arrangement.
  • For front brake work, match the master-cylinder bore and piston/seal design; for dust seals, compare the actual fork profile.

Yamaha XS400R parts questions

What distinguishes the XS400R Seca from an early XS400?
The 1982 Seca introduced a different DOHC twin engine and monoshock chassis. Use the R designation, year and installed-engine identity when ordering; early XS400 or Special applications do not automatically transfer to it.
Does the featured XS400R front master-cylinder kit include 1984?
The selected kit lists XS400R 1982–1983. It does not confirm 1984 R fitment, even though the engine gasket and float-needle examples extend to that year.
Do XS400R fork dust seals also replace the oil seals?
No. The featured dust-seal listing covers XS400R 1982–1983 and protects the fork sealing area from dirt. Oil seals retain fork oil and require a separate application and dimension check.
What should I check before buying an XS400R tank cap?
The featured cap lists XS400R 1982–1983 and is sold individually. Compare the filler-neck shape, locking or latching arrangement, venting and gasket fit to the installed tank, particularly after a tank swap.
