About the Yamaha YZ490
Identify the YZ490 front brake before choosing shoes or pads.
The YZ490 repair examples make the front-end distinction visible: a drum-brake shoe set and a disc-brake pad set service different hardware. Their listed years provide a starting point, but an older motocross motorcycle may have a replacement wheel or fork assembly. Check the installed front end as well as the frame identification.
Do not transfer brake years to fork seals
The linked fork-seal set is listed as 43 × 55 × 10.5 mm for 1982–1988 YZ490 applications. The front disc-pad listing continues to 1990, but that does not extend the seal application. Match the fork seals and brake friction parts independently.

1982–1984 front drum shoes
The linked shoes fit the listed front drum application. Compare the hub, shoe width and cam/pivot ends. A disc-brake conversion needs parts for the installed disc assembly instead.
1985–1990 front disc pads
The linked pads identify the front disc application. Match the caliper, backing-plate outline and retention details. Their ending year is different from the featured fork-seal range.
Identify your motorcycle before orderingYZ490 identification & fitment checks
- Record the exact YZ490 year and any front-end replacements.
- Identify a front drum with shoes or a front disc with a caliper, then compare the corresponding friction-part shape.
- Measure the installed fork seal’s inside diameter, outside diameter and height before choosing the seal set.
