About the Honda CM400
Choose the Hondamatic, Custom, E or T before building your parts list.
The CM400 family shares an air-cooled 395 cc parallel-twin engine design, with important changes around the transmission and running gear. The CM400A uses a Hondamatic torque converter and two rider-selected forward ranges. The C, E and T use manual clutches, and front brake and fork equipment also varies.
Shared engine family, model-specific repairs
Rear brake shoes can have a shared A/C/E/T fitment while front brake components differ. The carb kit below covers A, E and T for 1980–1981, so it should not be chosen for a C or a 1979 bike without separate confirmation. Use the model pages for a focused repair list.
Model and application differencesCM400A, CM400C, CM400E and CM400T compared
CM400A Hondamatic
Torque-converter transmission with two forward ranges. Engine and brake parts need their own A-specific application; manual-clutch kits are a different repair.

The 1981 Custom has its own fork and front-brake details. Its manual clutch and rear drum still require exact product applications.

The economy model combines a manual clutch with a front drum brake. Front disc pads and hydraulic master-cylinder kits are not replacements for that original drum system.

A manual-clutch model with a front disc and rear drum. Confirm the year of hydraulic parts; a 1981 master-cylinder listing does not cover every T.

- Record the complete CM400 suffix, frame number, engine number and model year.
- Confirm the transmission type and the brake equipment actually fitted.
- Read the carburetor body identification before choosing a kit.
- Compare replacement forks, wheels or engines with the original model specification.
Selected factory starting-frame references only; these are not complete VINs or full production ranges. Match the model designation and entire frame stamping. No ending serial numbers are inferred. Shared numeric beginnings do not identify the transmission. The CM400C asterisk is reproduced from the factory reference.
