About the Honda XL500R

Honda XL500R carburetor, engine, clutch, brake and front-fork parts.

Honda’s XL500R retained the air-cooled four-valve OHC single while adopting Pro-Link rear suspension. Its original chassis also used a 21-inch front wheel and drum brakes. On a project bike, these details help separate the R from the earlier XL500S before a fork, wheel or brake repair begins.

1982 XL500R carburetor and fork-seal choices

The XL500R carb kit and 37 × 50 × 11 mm fork oil seals are separate from the earlier S-model parts. The engine gasket set and individual clutch plate include both S and R applications. Keep the 1982 R product with each selected part, and compare kit contents or plate quantities with the work planned.

Kit 48-1427 lists the 1982 XL500R. The earlier S-model kit has its own application.

The R oil-seal set measures 37 × 50 × 11 mm. The selected XL500S seals have a different inner and outer diameter.

Some engine gasket and clutch-plate listings include the S and R. That overlap does not apply automatically to other parts.

The XL500R kit shown here covers 1982. The XL500S 1979–1981 kit has a separate application. Use the R-model kit details and the identification on the carburetor fitted to your bike.
What size fork oil seals fit a 1982 XL500R?
The XL500R 1982 fork oil seals measure 37 × 50 × 11 mm and come as a set of two. Dust seals are separate. Check the installed forks before substituting a seal size from another XL model.
Are the XL500R brake shoes shown here for the rear wheel?
Yes. The brake-shoe pair lists the rear brake on XL500R 1982. A front-brake repair needs its own shoe application, even though the original front and rear brakes are both drums.
