About the Honda XL500R
Honda XL500R carburetor, engine, clutch, brake and front-fork parts.
Honda’s XL500R retained the air-cooled four-valve OHC single while adopting Pro-Link rear suspension. Its original chassis also used a 21-inch front wheel and drum brakes. On a project bike, these details help separate the R from the earlier XL500S before a fork, wheel or brake repair begins.
1982 XL500R carburetor and fork-seal choices
The XL500R carb kit and 37 × 50 × 11 mm fork oil seals are separate from the earlier S-model parts. The engine gasket set and individual clutch plate include both S and R applications. Keep the 1982 R product with each selected part, and compare kit contents or plate quantities with the work planned.

Use the S/R chassis and service differences below to narrow a repair-parts search.
Carburetor
1982 R kit
Kit 48-1427 lists the 1982 XL500R. The earlier S-model kit has its own application.
Before ordering: Keep the R suffix when choosing the kit.
Front suspension
37 mm oil-seal application
The R oil-seal set measures 37 × 50 × 11 mm. The selected XL500S seals have a different inner and outer diameter.
Before ordering: Check for replacement forks before ordering.
Engine and clutch
Shared listings need individual checks
Some engine gasket and clutch-plate listings include the S and R. That overlap does not apply automatically to other parts.
Before ordering: Confirm the R year and quantity on each listing.
Comparing versions? Honda XL500S parts has its own model and year applications.
Prepare for the repairXL500R identification checklist
Record the model year, full factory code and installed components. Use the matching factory documentation to check frame and engine numbers.
Frame and rear suspension
Record the complete model marking and year, then inspect the Pro-Link rear assembly. Replacement plastics can hide the original identity.
Engine and fuel system
Record engine and carburetor identification separately. Use the 1982 R application for the carb kit and confirm the parts fitted to a modified engine.
Fork and brake service
Measure the installed fork assembly and identify the brake position. The rear shoes do not establish a front-brake application.
