About the Honda XR500
Separate early XR500 service parts from later XR500R repair applications.
The XR500 family brings several stages of Honda’s large off-road single into one parts search. Early XR500 drum-brake and carburetor applications sit beside later XR500R engine and chassis parts. Use this family guide to identify the right group, then open the XR500R repair guide for R-model service jobs.
Three useful application boundaries
The front drum shoes below cover XR500 1979–1980. The carburetor float also includes XR500R 1981–1982, while the engine gasket set covers XR500R 1983–1984. Keep those dates attached to the individual parts as you plan the repair, particularly when an engine or front end has been swapped.

Early XR500 chassis
1979–1980 front drum shoes are not front disc pads. Confirm the wheel and brake panel when restoring an early motorcycle.
XR500R engine and fork changes
The chosen fork seals cover 1981–1982; the selected gasket set covers 1983–1984. Neither application should be stretched across the other repair group.
Identify your motorcycle before orderingXR500 identification checklist
Use the motorcycle’s identification and the fitted component together. A registration year or family name can leave important application details unresolved.
- Distinguish XR500 from XR500R in the frame and market documentation.
- Identify the carburetor bodies and any replacement intake assembly before buying fuel parts.
- Record fork-seal markings and front brake type independently of the engine year.
