About the Suzuki GS400

Restoration parts for the early GS400 twin, with separate E, L and S applications.

Suzuki Motorcycle Logo

Suzuki’s archive dates the original GS400 to 1976, with an air-cooled, DOHC two-cylinder engine. The cast-wheel GS400E followed in 1978. Later uses of the GS400 name make the complete designation and year essential when selecting restoration parts.

Early GS400 engine and fork parts; E, L and S service parts

The early engine gasket set here lists GS400 1977–1979, while the fork seals list GS400 1977–1978. The E, L and S collections include later carburetor, control and electrical parts with their own ranges. In particular, the S bowl-gasket entry covers 1980–1981 and 1984–1986, leaving 1982–1983 unconfirmed for that part. Other suffixes also appear on individual products in the wider parent range.

GS400 identification and component checks
CheckWhat to confirm
Model and marketRetain E, L, S or another suffix when present, and confirm the model year rather than registration year alone.
Early engineUse engine markings and gasket outlines to check the GS400 1977–1979 set application.
CarburetorIdentify the carburetor body and compare bowl gasket and float-valve parts separately.
Chassis changesCheck the fork, swingarm pivot, control perches and electrical connectors actually fitted.

Suzuki GS400 parts questions

Which Suzuki GS400 collection should I use?
Match the complete designation on the motorcycle. GS400E, GS400L and GS400S have separate collection links. Use this parent collection for early GS400 entries and other listed suffixes, then check the product’s exact model and year.
Which engine gasket set and fork seals are listed for an early GS400?
The linked engine gasket set lists GS400 1977–1979. The linked 33 × 46 × 11 mm fork seals list GS400 1977–1978. Confirm the fitted engine and fork; these base-model entries do not establish later E, L or S compatibility.
Should I choose a float bowl gasket or a float needle and seat?
The bowl gasket seals the bowl-to-body joint. The needle and seat regulate incoming fuel. Inspect the carburetor to identify the component needing service, then match its design and listed application. These parts perform different jobs.
Do all GS400S service parts cover 1980–1986?
No. The linked bowl gasket and needle-and-seat assembly list S 1980–1981 and 1984–1986, while the swingarm bearings list S 1981–1982. Keep the year gaps and each component’s application separate.
