About the Yamaha XS850
Keep Yamaha’s shaft-drive triple in service, from engine sealing to clutch and brake repairs.
The Yamaha XS850 pairs an 826cc DOHC three-cylinder engine with shaft final drive. Restoring one can involve both engine work and the controls, suspension and brakes around it. Planning those jobs separately helps you choose the gaskets for the engine being opened and the cables or seals for the assemblies actually fitted.
Choosing XS850G, XS850S and XS850L parts
Start with the complete model designation. Clutch cables have separate G, S and L applications, so compare cable length, end fittings and routing before ordering. Engine gaskets follow a different application: the set below lists XS850 1980–1985 and XS850L/S 1980–1982. These are the set’s fitment entries; check each chassis or control part against its own model and year.

Compare these model and component differences before planning the repair.
Clutch controls
Compare G, S and L cables
The G and L cable examples list 1980; the S cable lists 1980–1981. Each follows a separate product application.
Parts checkpoint: Match overall length, inner-wire travel, both ends and the route around the handlebars.
Engine sealing
Plan the gasket order around the teardown
The engine gasket set covers XS850 1980–1985 and XS850L/S 1980–1982.
Parts checkpoint: Compare the contents with the covers and joints being opened; check oil seals separately.
Forks and brakes
Identify the installed assembly
The G-model fork seals below measure 36 × 48 × 11 mm. The front master-cylinder kit has its own model-year application.
Parts checkpoint: Measure the old fork seal and record brake position and cylinder markings.
Identify your motorcycle before orderingXS850 identification checklist
Use the motorcycle’s own markings. For an imported or modified bike, include the market and photos of the assembly being repaired.
- Model and market: Record the complete model designation and model year from the motorcycle label and matching documents.
- Frame and engine: Photograph the frame/VIN marking and engine number separately. A replacement engine needs its own identification.
- Fitted component: Note the full G, H, L or S designation where present, cable ends, fork dimensions and brake position, as relevant to the repair.
- Product match: Compare the exact model-year application, dimensions and package contents. Confirm any unlisted year or component mismatch before ordering.
